Nanna: Modular Lighting for Indoor Use

Lighting Design Inspired by Sumerian Mythology

Nanna, designed by Alican Faydali, is a modular lighting device inspired by the moon god in Sumerian Mythology. It is specifically designed for indoor use, particularly in situations where sudden power failures occur and individual lighting is needed.

Nanna is a mobile and modular lighting element consisting of individual units that can work together or separately depending on the need for light. The design incorporates conductive magnets at the joining details, allowing the units to be held together with each other or attached to metal surfaces.

One of the unique features of Nanna is its ability to provide illumination to multiple individuals at different locations when used individually. This makes it a practical solution for situations where more than one person requires immediate lighting.

The main body and base of Nanna are made from ABS plastic material using plastic injection molding technology. The use of OLED panels provides flexibility in product formability and ensures homogeneous illumination across the surface area. Industrial conductive magnets are used at the joining details to facilitate easy attachment and detachment of the units.

The units can be charged using a USB output or AC adaptor while they are located on the charging base. Once removed from the base, they automatically switch to the "on" mode and remain illuminated until they are seated on the base again. This approach ensures that the units are always charged and connected to the field of use.

Nanna is designed to meet the needs of indoor lighting, offering modularity and versatility in emergency situations. Its integration of OLED panels and the use of industrial magnets posed significant challenges during the design process. However, through extensive research and creative problem-solving, Alican Faydali successfully overcame these obstacles.

The Nanna lighting design project was undertaken in Cappadocia during the late winter and spring of 2017. It has received recognition for its innovative and practical approach, winning the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
